endodontic treatment (root canal treatment)

The best alternative to a tooth extraction is usually endodontic treatment, otherwise known as a "root canal." When it comes to saving a tooth that has been severely damaged, broken, or abscessed, root canals are often the only option.

Many people assume root canals are painful and expensive, but they allow you to preserve your original teeth (saving you money) and are gentler than you might expect. In our Woodridge office, we provide a variety of tooth replacement solutions, but nothing can replace a natural tooth. They outperform any denture or bridge, so it’s our goal to preserve them whenever possible.

Seven Bridges Dental Studio provides full root canal treatment (endodontic therapy). If you think you need a root canal or you want a second option, our knowledgeable oral health professionals are happy to help.

What is Endodontic Treatment?

Although endodontic therapy is usually thought of as a last resort for your smile, it is an integral part of saving teeth that would otherwise have to be extracted. Although it’s received a bad reputation, getting a root canal isn't all that different from completing other routine dental procedures.

Before receiving endodontic therapy, we’ll take 3D images of your mouth with our minimally invasive CBCT technology. These images allow us to have a comprehensive view inside your mouth so that we can thoroughly examine the issue and access whether or not your tooth needs to be extracted.

During a root canal, the damaged nerve tissue is removed, and the nerve chamber is sealed off. This keeps the tooth from becoming reinfected and allows it to function normally for several more years.

Thanks to contemporary technology and treatments in dental anesthesia and sedation, your root canal treatment can be a relaxing experience.

Why do I Need a Root Canal?

There are a variety of reasons why your tooth may require a root canal. The heart of the problem lies in the nerve of your tooth. If you've had a severe injury or infection that has caused the nerve to die or become infected, you'll need to take action to prevent tooth loss.

Even if a tooth isn't hurting or visibly abscessed, our dental team can spot a few warning signs. Sometimes, old fillings can leak or decay before you notice them. While fillings and crowns treat the outside of the tooth, endodontic treatment works from the inside out to treat the entire tooth structure.

Endodontic treatment is one of the few options for saving a tooth with a damaged nerve or a severe fracture. In years gone by, it might have been extracted, but thanks to our in-house endodontic therapy treatments, Dr. Querishi can now help you preserve your teeth for as long as possible.

What to Expect

When Dr. Querishi performs a root canal, she will use local anesthetics to make you comfortable while the infected nerve is carefully removed from your tooth. We'll sterilize the hollow chambers left behind to get rid of microorganisms and residual bacteria. Following that, the canals are sealed to avoid reinfection.

The filling material reaches from the root tip of a tooth all the way to the anatomical crown. A restorative crown (“cap”) will be needed to preserve the tooth from wearing down and chipping since it will be more prone to breakage as it’s no longer alive. Any soreness around the injection site can be managed with an over-the-counter pain reliever.
